Priced at about $35 comes STM Bags’ Harbour (Amazon), an excellent protective case for the iPhone 5. It’s dockable, protective, and has excellent build quality. Continue reading for the full review.
Presentation, including packaging, is a bit on the average side. For the $35, it leaves the customer wishing they would’ve received a bit more, including the stuff that’s on the inside. All you get is the case itself, so don’t expect anything such as screen protectors or any sort of cover.
Aside from the slightly high price and lack of extras, the case itself is made of two different materials, both of which are fused together to give you a unique look and feel. On the inside and on some parts of the outside, you’ll find the TPU material. The bulk of the case is using a soft-touch coated polycarbonate, which gives the case an increased amount of grip. The satin coating also helps decrease the amount of visible fingerprints and scratches.
Thanks to the TPU, you get a little bit of shock protection when dropping your iPhone. For cutouts, you’ll find one large cutout along the left side (volume buttons + silent switch), one on the top (power button), and a large one on the bottom (3.5mm headset jack + microphone + lightning port + speaker). On the back, you’ll find the cutout for the rear-facing camera, rear microphone, and LED flash. I haven’t experienced any issues with the flash while using this case. As I have the black/slate iPhone 5, I like how there aren’t any button covers; being able to see the sleek buttons and band of the black iPhone 5 is a huge plus in my opinion. Oh, and yes, there’s a nice lay-on-the-table design with this case.
A unique feature of this case (that isn’t currently found on many other iPhone 5 cases) is the “dock flipper,” as I’ve decided to call it. It can flip off of your phone so that you can easily dock everything into a dock, should they become available. It also makes the case easier to install and remove. One thing to note is that, when looking at the back, a small area of the back of your iPhone 5 will be visible. It’s a bit hard to explain in writing, so I recommend watching our YouTube review video below for more info on that. Just keep in mind that it really isn’t a big deal and won’t damage anything.
Overall, the Harbour by STM Bags is an excellent case and definitely doesn’t lack in terms of quality, design, and features. A price of about $30 would sound a little more attractive, but if you can look beyond that, I can easily recommend this case.
