[Review] X-Doria Dash for iPhone 5 [Video]

A back cover, with style. That’s what the Dash by X-Doria (Amazon) is all about. Despite its high price, this back cover offers a neat & unique design, giving iPhone cases a bit of a new meaning. Check out the full review below to see what this case is all about.

For starters, this case will cost you about $35 directly from X-Doria, which isn’t by any means cheap, especially considering that this is just a back cover that includes absolutely no extras. I would’ve liked seeing this case come with at least 2 screen shields and a microfiber for that much. It just seems like it should be standard for case companies to include these basic essentials with their products. Moving along now…

The case is primarily made of polycarbonate. In particular, this is the black version of the Dash, and as noted in our video review below, it’s available in a number of different color combinations. The black coloring on the Dash has a metallic finish, which looks great in areas that have plenty of light.

The back of the case is where everything comes together. You’ll notice a dotted pattern. This entire area gives off a faux-leather feeling, which is great, and results in added grip. There’s a clear polycarbonate window that runs vertically down the middle of the case, allowing you to see the Apple logo and the “iPhone” branding. There’s also a large cutout for the camera, rear microphone, and LED flash. I’ve had no issues when using this case with the flash.

The rest of the cutouts are pretty standard, including a complete cutout for the bottom and most of the top , and a large cutout for the left-side area, which itself includes the two volume buttons and the silent switch. Oh, there’s also absolutely no lay-on-the-table design with this case, so the edges basically sit flush with the front of your iPhone 5.

In terms of protection, there won’t be much. Drops? Moderate drops onto carpet would be fine, with anything else most likely damaging the case and your iPhone. Given no front protection at all, you should better hope that your case, should it be dropped, never lands on the front or bottom edge. However, there is a bit of extra material towards the top to the left of the power button..

In the end, this is a pretty awesome case that adds very little bulk to your iPhone 5, due to the general nature of this kind of case, it being a back cover and all. Unfortunately, its price is rather high, but one could think of that being made up in the form of a uniquely-designed case that just seems to work really well. You won’t be getting much protection, but the design of the back, again, simply makes up for that.
