An iPhone 5 cover with a twist. Want a simple case that allows you to customize it on-the-go? Meet the Cubit by X-Doria (Amazon) for the iPhone 5. For the most part, it’s a standard snap-on back cover, until you actually go to the back, as it allows you to insert silicone cubes into a 5×9 grid array of squares. Is it worth the $29.99 price?
The answer? Maybe. While, for your money, you don’t get any of the standard extras, such as screen protectors or microfiber cloths, you will get plenty of extra silicone cubes for your enjoyment. They also come in two different colors for even more flexibility. Each silicone cube is very easy to remove and to snap into place. Because of the way that they were made, you don’t have to worry about the cubes falling out while you’re actually using the case. Because of the extra pieces, you won’t have to worry if you just so happen to lose a few of them.
At its core, the Cubit is just your standard snap-on back shell, so if you want protection, it’s best to stay away. I suppose that one could think of the silicone cubes as providing a means for shock protection for drops.
So, you get a completely exposed top and bottom of the case, so that accessing the bottoms and ports in those areas are easy. The same also goes for the silent switch/volume button area on the left side.
In the end, I can see this case being a must-have for some people, but for me, it just doesn’t have enough protection or features that really justifies the $29.99. The case itself is just fine, but the price isn’t.
