It’s one thing to get a job in the IT field, and something entirely different to start the IT infrastructure of an entire company from scratch. While there is a lot of freedom, it can be daunting to know that half of any freedom is the power to screw up royally. The following are a few things to take into consideration whether you’re starting an IT department or an entire IT company.
Decide Whether to Outsource or Stay In-house

How much of your tech infrastructure do you want to keep on the inside? While it can be tempting to go whole hog in either the outsourcing or the internal directions, extremes are rarely your best bet. When you outsource, you can often trust that the people running the equipment are dedicated professionals, and the costs are often reduced versus owning and running everything yourself. But if you really want total control, keeping most everything on the inside is a powerful way to keep that control.
Choose What You Will Quantify
When you begin working on your quality performance management plan, you will need to decide on precisely what you intend to quantify. There is no such thing as right and wrong things to quantify, but each additional variable will add complexity and potentially help you plan more effectively.
Develop Fallback Plans
Anything that can go wrong eventually will. As sad as it is, this fact of life does not change when you are starting your own IT department or company. In fact, when you’re starting from scratch, you get to experience the strange problems that only a startup has. Now is a great time to develop plans to deal with problems that come up. As you encounter and solve problems, make sure to document steps taken so that future management won’t have to spend as much time going through trial and error.
Make Sure Someone is in Charge All the Time
As tempting as it is to delegate everything, at the end of the day, someone has to be accountable. If you are starting an entire company, sooner or later you’ll have to move on to the business side of things. But if you don’t leave anyone at the helm of the IT department, you shouldn’t be surprised if it crashes on the proverbial rocks. You need someone who can think creatively, has high energy and actually cares — not an easy list to fulfill. But once you have a department that’s reasonably well put together, someone has to run it during normal days.
Make Sure Everyone is Qualified to Do Their Jobs
Qualification is a tricky thing. While going for the best certifications and degrees is one way to make sure everyone is qualified, you don’t necessarily need to do that. The most important thing is, can they do the job you’ll be assigning them to? Beyond that, you can get them additional training if the law comes into play.
